Description

The dhurrin-free sorghum presents a valuable solution for mitigating cyanide poisoning risks in livestock.  This study focused on understanding both its nutritive value and livestock preference. Ewes' preferences were evaluated through a free-choice grazing trial comparing a dhurrin-free hybrid to three commercial hybrids, and a comparison between a set of near isogenic lines varying in dhurrin production. The study also included an assessment of the nutritive value and nitrate levels in the hybrids. The results showed that ewes favored both the dhurrin-free hybrid and dhurrin-free near isogenic lines, while nutritional values were similar across the hybrids. These findings demonstrated ewes preferentially grazed the dhurrin-free sorghum lines and there was no reduction in nutritive value.
